Seong-Gil Kang
Dr. Seong-Gil Kang is currently Director of Marine Environmental Emergency Preparedness and Response Regional Activity Centre (MERRAC) of the Northwest Pacific Action Plan (NOWPAP).

The Centre is responsible for regional co-operation in the field of marine pollution preparedness and response in the Northwest Pacific region with support of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and International Maritime Organization (IMO). The NOWPAP, as one of the UNEPs Regional Seas Programme, was adopted in 1994 by four countries in the Northwest Pacific region- the Peoples Republic of China, Japan, Republic of Korea and Russian Federation. Based upon the decision of the NOWPAP Intergovernmental Meeting, the Centre, established in 2000, take responsibilities to cover the regional co-operation related to marine-based marine litter, ballast water (alien species), other ship-related pollutions, as well as oil and chemical spills.

Since 2000, as Senior Researcher for the Maritime and Ocean Engineering Research Institute / Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute (MOERI/KORDI) (hosting institute of MERRAC), he has covered the variety of R&D related to marine science and technology, including marine pollution preparedness and response. Especially, since 2005, he has acted as a manager of R&D project to develop technologies relevant to carbon dioxide storage in marine geological structure, which is regarded as one option of technologies to mitigate global warming.

He has published more than 30 papers and served to an editorial board for the Journal of the Korean Society for Marine Environmental Engineering. He received the Ph.D. degree in Marine Ecology from The Seoul National University, Korea in 2000, especially focusing on marine environmental monitoring to reveal trace metal pollution in Korean waters, using a benthic organism.
