Ruth Coutto
Ruth Coutto joined UNEP in 2001, and she currently serves as a programme officer on Safer Production at UNEPs Sustainable Consumption and Production Branch of the Division of Technology, Industry and Economics in Paris. She has taken on several responsibilities in the area of safer production since her start with UNEP.

For many years, Ruth has managed the APELL (Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at Local Level) programme that promotes awareness of the risks in an industrialized community and coordinated preparedness between the industry, the local authorities and the local population. She is now leading the work in the area of safer production - promoting national and sectoral approaches to prevent industrial accidents from happening. She has developed and implemented successful projects on the topics of safer production, local level disaster preparedness, and preparedness in tourism destinations.

Ruth has a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a specialization in Pollution Control Engineering both from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Prior to joining UNEP, she worked for 10 years for CETESB - the Environmental Protection Agency for Sao Paulo State Brazil.
