Mozaharul Alam
Mozaharul Alam, well known as Babu, has joined the UNEP in August 2009 as Regional Climate Change Coordinator for Asia and the Pacific Region located in Bangkok. Overseeing and facilitating development and implementation of all climate change related projects in the region is his key responsibility while ensuring overall consistency with the UNEP Programme of Work (PoW). He is focal person for Ecosystem Based Adaptation project in Nepal and coordinates the Adaptation Network for Asia and the Pacific region. He also manages the project “Capacity Building in Development of Policy Framework for Promotion of Low Carbon Emission Societies in Central Asia”. He has been attending climate change negotiations since 2000 and in the last five years, he attended climate change negotiations as a member of Bangladesh Delegations. He was also one to the coordinators of the G77 and China for Adaptation Building Block under Ad-hoc Working Group on Long-term Cooperative Action (AWG-LCA) under the Bali Road Map. He has also contributed to the Fourth Assessment Report (AR4) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as a Contributing Author and now working as a Lead Author of the Working Group II of IPCC for the Fifth Assessment Report.
Alam has obtained his M. Sc degree in Geography in 1989 from Jahangirnagar University in Bangladesh. He has spent significant of his professional time with Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS) starting from 1992 as a Researcher. He has lead several climate change studies and coordinated climate change programme of the organization. In 2004, he has joined Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of Bangladesh as National Project Coordinator to formulate National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA). He returned to BCAS in 2005 and continued his responsibility to lead climate change team and programme until he moves to UNEP. As recognition of his professional work, he has received an international fellowship from the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) under the Climate Change Programme for three years starting from 2006. He has also worked as the Regional Fellow for South Asia Region for Capacity Strengthening for LDCs for Adaptation to Climate Change (CLACC) which is being implemented by IIED. He has conducted and coordinated significant amount of research on climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation at national, regional and international levels. He has also designed and implemented community based adaption project in Bangladesh and provided technical inputs on Community Based Adaptation to Climate Change project in African Countries.
