Nelson Sabogal
Nelson Sabogal is a Senior Programme Officer of the Technical Assistance Branch at the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions located in Geneva, Switzerland. Mr. Sabogal leads the strengthening of the operation of the Regional Centres at the Technical Assistance Branch. He contributes to identification of Parties needs and provision of increased capacity-building to Parties, including the formulation of strategic goals and objectives to catalyze transformational change and leverage impact that would be significantly larger than operating on its own. He is also participating in updating and development of innovative training tools to strengthen the Secretariats support to Parties. Mr. Sabogal is organizing enhanced cooperation and coordination in providing technical assistance at national and regional levels.

Prior to joining UNEP in 1993 Mr. Sabogal worked as a researcher with the Colombian Government and as Professor at the University of La Salle in Bogot. Before joining the Secretariat of the Basel Convention in 2002 Mr. Sabogal was the Senior Scientific Affairs Officer of the Secretariat for the Vienna Convention and the Montreal Protocol (Ozone Secretariat) at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Headquarters in Nairobi and filled several other climate science roles. He has written numerous articles in national and international journals, a number of books and reviewed several international publications.

A Meteorological Engineer with a Master of Science and specializations in Climatology, Physical-Dynamical Climatology and Environmental Protection, Mr. Sabogal has won awards and recognition for his work from both UNEP and external authorities.
