Alex Pires
Alex Pires is the Programme Officer acting as Focal Point for the Multilateral Environment Agreements on Biodiversity and Ecosystems for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), based in Panama at the UNEP's Regional Office for LAC.

He supports the implementation, at the regional level, of UNEP's activities on ecosystems and biodiversity, in accordance with UNEP mandate and Programme of Work, with focus on Ecosystem Management and Environmental Governance sub-programmmes.

He has 12 years of professional experience in the fields of environmental management, capacity building / knowledge transfer, cooperation for human development and others related themes, most of focused on water resources, ecosystem and biodiversity, adaptation to climate change, regional sustainable development, waste management and recycling, and recuperation of degraded areas.

During this period, he had the opportunity to work on international and local projects in Latin American and the Caribbean, and Europe.

Alex is from Brazil and joined UNEP in September 2009. He has a DEA on Sustainability, Technology and Humanism at UNESCO Chair in Sustainability (Technical University of Catalonia - Barcelona, Spain), a M.Sc. degree on Urban Environment Engineering and a B.Sc. degree on Civil Engineering (both by the Federal University of Bahia - Brazil).
