Charles Immanuel Akhimien
My name is Dr. Charles Immanuel Akhimien, I am 24 years old and I am from Benin City, Nigeria.
I graduated as a medical doctor from the School of medicine of the University of Benin in April of this year. I am very passionate about the environment, especially its effects on public health. I am an avid writer and blogger and I write for numerous environment blogs and volunteer for various non-profit organizations.
I am the winner of this years World Environment Day blogging competition and I have the great privilege of blogging live for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for World Environment Day 2013 in Mongolia. I am particularly motivated about this years World Environment Day theme because in a world of so much starvation, I see food wastage as a crime. Also, my undergraduate work on climate change in medical school led me to find out that food waste contributes about one-third of greenhouse emissions responsible for climate change. This is for me is a cause of great concern.
Writing is an opportunity to both inform and inspire and that is what I strive to do always. Being a young person myself, my focus is on young people and how they too can make a tangible difference by imbibing in them the culture of conscious consumption especially with regards to food.
