Marika Palosaari
Marika Palosaari is an environmental policy expert specializing in conflict prevention, disaster risk reduction and regional environmental cooperation. She joined the United Nations Environment Programmes (UNEP) in 2005 at its Regional Office for Europe and is the Programme Coordinator of the Environment and Security Initiative (ENVSEC), which is a partnership between UNEP, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and the Regional Environment Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC). ENVSECs mission is to help reduce environment and security risks through strengthened cooperation amongst and within countries in Central Asia, Eastern Europe, Southern Caucasus and South-Eastern Europe. Marika is responsible for facilitating the inter-agency collaboration among the ENVSEC partner organizations and coordinating the development, implementation and monitoring of ENVSEC projects in four thematic areas; management of transboundary natural resources, hazardous waste, security impacts of climate change and public participation.

Marika started her professional career at the Finnish Environment Institute working with sustainable development indicators and environmental management systems. Prior to joining UNEP she worked also as a Researcher at the Finnish Environment Institute and the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. Her research work focused on environmental communication, public participation and conflict resolution. Marika holds a Masters Degree in Environmental Policy.
