H.E. Dr. Martin Kimani
H.E. Dr. Martin Kimani is Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary serving as Kenya's Permanent Representative and Head of Mission to the United Nations at Nairobi, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT). Prior to his appointment, he was based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, serving as the Director of the IGAD Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism (CEWARN) which deploys an extensive response network to prevent and mitigate violent cross-border conflict in the Horn of Africa countries. In the past fifteen years, he has worked in currency and bond trading, political risk analysis, academia, counter terrorism, and now multilateral diplomacy. He held senior positions focusing on energy, security and NATO and Africa at the Washington DC Think Tank, the Atlantic Council of the United States; was the first Counter Terrorism Advisor to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD); led the Africa Division of Exclusive Analysis in London providing Lloyd's of London insurance syndicates - among other corporates - on specialist intelligence forecasts on commercially relevant political and violent risks in Africa; taught future commanders and staff officers at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Shrivenham, UK; and was a strategist of emerging market currencies and interest rates at hedge fund FX Concepts (once the world's largest manager of currency overlay strategies with $14 billion under management) in New York City. Ambassador Kimani holds an MA and PhD in War Studies from Kings College of the University of London, and BA in philosophy from the University of New Hampshire in the United States. He is a Fellow of the African Leadership Initiative and the Aspen Global Leadership Program. He was also the 2013 Distinguished African Visiting Fellow at the South African Institute of International Affairs. He is married to June Arunga Kimani with whom he has two children.
