Chizuru Aoki
Chizuru Aoki is the Iraq Project Coordinator at UNEPs International Environmental Technology Centre (IETC), located in Shiga, Japan. IETC is part of the Division of Technology, Industry, and Economics. She manages UNEPs large scale project to support sustainable management of the Iraqi Marshlands, which includes on-the-ground provision of safe drinking water, sanitation, marshland management, community level initiatives, data collection and analysis, capacity building as well as policy coordination support.

She first joined UNEP in 1993 as a Junior Professional Officer, and continued as Environmental Affairs Officer within the Industry and Environment Programme Activity Centre (currently DTIE) in Paris. In 1997, she became a Fulbright Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and subsequently received a Ph.D in Technology, Management, and Policy from MIT. Prior to returning to UNEP in 2003, she continued her work as a researcher at MIT, and carried out integrated assessments of environmental technologies, and made policy recommendations to developing country authorities based on scenario analysis of options to improve the environment. She has authored various publications in the field of technological change for environmental improvement.

She holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Rice University and MS in Environmental and Water Resource Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in the United States. Chizuru is a Japanese citizen, and is married with a son and two large cats.
