Matthias Kern
Matthias Kern is Senior Programme Officer for Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in the Division of GEF Coordination (GEF: Global Environment Facility). The GEF is an independent financial organization that provides grants to developing countries and countries with economies in transition for projects that benefit the global environment. UNEP is one of the Implementing Agencies for the GEF, Kern coordinates the UNEP GEF projects related to chemicals.

Kern holds a Diploma in Biology and a doctorate in agricultural science from the University of Goettingen, Germany. He started his professional career as Research Associate at a Plant Protection Institute in Germany before he joined the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), where he worked in the field of pesticide and industrial chemicals handling and use, regulation and technical assistance for the implementation of international chemicals conventions.
