Dear Sir,
At a very crucial point of my research, I realise I have no clue to define 'sustainable practices' specific to any firm. If a firm incorporates water saving, energy saving or saving in resource usage, I have mentioned them the firm specific practices as 'sustainable practices' but this term is not acceptable to the economists of the faculty. I do not know how to convince them, nor to recoin the term.
Can you kindly advice me?
Thanking you,
Warm regards, Rhama

I strongly recommend you to visit our web page www.unep.fr/pc where you will find lot of useful information; you need some references so as to convince your “economists” that will be provided in this site; go to the Marrakech process; we will then be glad to assist you further if needed.

In your opinion, what are the mechanisms that could lead to changing unsustainable production and consumption patterns and ensuring the sustainable management of natural resources the in the Mediterranean Region and what ways and means should be applied to achieve that objective?

Once concerned actors are made aware of the unsustainability of the SCP patterns, through objective assessments, a multistakeholder consultation mechanism should be etablished so as to define jointly the major stakes and challenges, and agree on the key driving forces to induce change and make change happen. Process for changing SCP patterns should invlove 1- government bodies for the necessary legal framework and appropriate financial and fiscal measures, 2- business and industry for revising the decision making process with adequate technical and financial means, responsible investments for safe and environmentally friendly products and services, and voluntatry corporate environment and social responsible actions, and 3- citizens/consumers for expressing relevant choices, putting pressure on the government and business through opinions and choices of their products; For the Mediterranean Region, it is essential that real and effective partnerships are developed, which is not the case so far despite the various scattered regional actions. Concerned actors should take their responsibilities by defining adequate institutional, technical and finacial mechanisms to respond to the stakes and challenges of the fragile Mediterranean ecosystem. Almost all "means" do exist in the region but the "ways" are still not relevant to the serioussness of the situation. Cooperation towards SCP patterns is not only North/South, but also South/North and South/South; promoting SCP in the region should be a share Mediterranean concern, even though through common but differentiated responsibility, but not only an EU concern.

Changing unsustainable PCP would require pro-activeness: raising awareness of the public and the consumers, making the private entrepreneurs more responsible from the environmenet and social aspects, and inducing the public authorities to set down economic, financial and fiscal incentives and measures to promote efficiency in the use of the resources. Applying the life cycle approach and supply chain management together with CESR approach could set the pace and identify the driving forces to that end.

What strategies do you propose for educating policy-makers in your area of specialization?

Awareness-raising and consultation mechanisms so as to make them aware of the impacts of their decisions and make better aware about the impacts of their decisions in terms of economic and social responsibilities; this applies to the public as well as to the private sectors. Demonstration the costs of impacts or of non-action, as well as informing the consumers and end-users of the advantages of having different and more sustainable products could progressively induce the policy makers to reconsider their decision making process. Moreover, acting as catalyser between the public policy makers and the private decion makers could have a major impact on getteing practical and realistic and operational policies.

Sorry but your question do not correspond to the subject I am covering for this session and you do not dive information on the resolutions you are reeferring to; as per the date of your question, it seems that it was addressed to another session. in any case, I strongly advice you to consult UNEP web site www.unep.org and send you question to the division of environmental law and conventions/DELC, or write directly to bakary.kante@unep.org;
