Dear Stefanos,

Is there a particular carbon calculator or carbon-offset mechanism that you can recommend both to me as a private traveller and to larger organizations, such as the United Nations Office in Vienna?
Thank you
Kind regards,
Elisabeth
Elisabeth (from Austria)
Dear Elisabeth,

UNEP is developing a carbon calculator; it is in a beta version but available for use if you would like it. Please contact me in my personal email (firstname.lastname (at) unep.fr) where I can send you more information on this issue and the contact details to receive the calculator.

We are currently working also to develop some guidelines for selection of carbon-offset mechanisms. We can not at this time suggest a specific carbon offset service but I hope that in the near future we will be able to give a list of criteria that will determine credible providers.

Best regards
Stefanos

Electricity is the main ostacle for the development of this country.
Why UNEP does'nt introduce Wind energy to help more than 80% of poor Tanzanians in villages, so to alleviate porverty?
Most investors are basing to cities and towns. But UNEP can be of good to look energy from another angle.

Dear Mushumbusi

UNEP is working with a wide range of stakeholders to diversify and increase the global share of renewable energy sources, improve access to environmentally sound energy resources and services, provide access to energy markets, and accelerate the development and dissemination of better energy efficiency methods and technology. Implementation of specific country-projects is done with cooperation with national authorities.

What strategies do you propose for educating policy-makers in your area of specialization ?
Centre for Environment Education (from India)
UNEP has recently published a practical manual on "climate change mitigation and adaptation in the tourism sector". You can download the manual directly from the following address:
http://www.unep.fr/scp/publications/details.asp?id=DTI/1047/PA

The manual was used in the 1st International Seminar on Tourism and Climate Change that was organised by UNEP, the University of Oxford, UNWTO and WMO.
http://www.geog.ox.ac.uk/news/events/ccamts/

The manual and the Seminar pages are giving a detailed analysis of strategies, methods and tools for capacity building of policy makers in the specific subject.

Dear Stefanos,

Please could you let me know some useful comprehensive tourism and socio-economic revival model/frameworks (if available) for SIDS that are impacted by natural disasters? (I am aware of some of the frameworks suggested for Islands but they are mainly related to economic revival giving no emphasis for social changes, e.g: loss of lives in tourism dependent community). Many thanks.
Vijay Reddy (from United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland)
Dear Vijay,

we are about to publish 2 new UNEP manuals: One on natural disasters in coastal zones and SIDS and a second on sustainable tourism planning in coastal zones. I expect that they will be available by the end of August and I will send you the link for download. For the time being I can recommend the site of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction where you can find some cases for SIDS.
