David Smith is an economist in the Division of Regional Co-operation in UNEP. He is the Team Leader of the Poverty and Environment Unit, which is the UNEP component of the UNDP-UNEP Poverty and Environment Initiative. The UNEP and UNDP Poverty and Environment Initiative focuses on supporting governments to integrate environmental sustainable resource management into national development procresses, including PRSPs and MDG implementation activities. The rationale for this is that environmentally unsustainable resource use over time reduces the social and economic benefits ecosystems generate for people. Thus, povertry reduction is assisted, over time, if the environment is used sustainably. .He is an economist with a Masters degree in agricultural economics from Massey University in New Zealand. His studies included a focus on macro, environmental and development economics.
