Muralee Thummarukudy
Muralee Thummarukudy is a Senior Programme Officer with UNEP's Post-Conflict and Disaster Management Branch and leads UNEP's work in Disaster Risk Reduction. Thummarukudy led the UNEP International Expert Mission to Japan earlier this month which studied the response by Japanese authorities and communities to an unprecedented volume of debris following the massive earthquake and tsunami one year ago.

Thummarukudy has extensive experience in the fields of corporate environmental and disaster management, and environmental impact assessment. Since joining UNEP in 2003, he has been involved in responses to the major recent natural disasters of the 21st century, ranging from the South-East Asian Tsunami in 2004 to the 2011 floods in Thailand. He is the holder of a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the Indian Kanpur Institute of Technology. Recently he was awarded a Diploma in International Environmental Law by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research.

Thummarukudy is the author of several publications in International Academic Journals of which one was awarded the best paper by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1996.
