Sylvie Motard has been working for more than 15 years in the areas of international and European environmental and sustainable development issues following university specialization in European and Environmental law and economics (Bordeaux and Amsterdam). She has acquired in depth knowledge of EU decision-making (formal and informal), through working for the European Commission and the European Parliament.
Sylvie joined the United Nations Environment Programme in April 2000 with the aim to set up a liaison office to the European Union. The objective was to strengthen relations between UNEP and the EU and its Member States. Since then, the office has grown into a small team of four staff members who initiate regular policy dialogues with EU institutions and promote UNEP’s activities and programmes at global and regional levels. They also aim at establishing strategic partnerships with civil society groups and private sector, and initiate joint programmes and projects. Furthermore, they work closely with UN colleagues in Brussels to put in place the One UN approach towards the EU.
One of the main challenge Sylvie currently sees both in personal and professional life is how to communicate on environmental and developmental issues, and she is particularly keen in exchanging with other professionals in the area coming with and from different backgrounds
