What would be ecosystem approach for management of mining activity.

Dear Manoj,
The ecosystem approach is based on the application of appropriate scientific methodologies focused on levels of biological organization, which encompass the essential structure, processes, functions and interactions among organisms and their environment. It also recognizes that humans, with their cultural diversity, are an integral component of many ecosystems. As such, it is a strategy for the integrated management of land, water and living resources that promotes conservation and sustainable use in an equitable way.
Thus, the application of the ecosystem approach to mining may help to develop sustainable mining practices based on scientific grounds, as well as the equitable sharing of benefits arising from the mining activities.
The ecosystem approach can be applied to the whole cycle of mining activities, as follows:
Permit- assessment of sight- public participation:
The application of the ecosystem approach in reality often means dealing with competing interests of diverse users and uses both in scientific and socio-economic terms. The area of a potential new mine is part of a bigger ecosystem, with its specific biological and ecological characteristics, interactions. At the same time it can be ground for many ongoing, other planned activities, from the livelihoods and spiritual needs of local communities to tourism and protected areas.
Based on the ecosystem approach, in scientific terms, before the creation of the mine, the ecosystem in present should be studied and analyzed, to see interconnections of the planned mine’s activities and impacts on the environment and on the socio-economics of the region (in relation to the latter, public participation/consultation can be key).
The permit to the mining activity and the planned mining activities should build on the findings of the above assessments (in practical terms on an environmental risk assessment and on the outcomes of the public engagement/consultation).
Mining activity:
During the actual mining activity, the mining impacts on the ecosystem should be carefully monitored, with negative impacts minimized, using sustainable (both environmentally and socially cautious) mining principles, practices.
Restoration:
Once mining activities are over, the restoration of the ecosystem should take place, again based on the ecosystem approach, looking at the interactions between land, water sources and living resources, noting also potential cultural usage of the sight.
