Assisting Caribbean States' Sustainable Development through Green Economy (ACSSD-GE)
The objective of the ACSSD-GE project was to support and build the capacity of selected Caribbean Small Island Developing States (SIDS) – particularly Jamaica, Haiti and Saint Lucia – for advancing their sustainable development agenda through a green economy transition. The ACSSD-GE provided technical assistance and capacity-building support for policy analysis, investment reforms, networking, and informed decision-making focused on simultaneously realizing economic growth, poverty reduction, and ecosystems improvement. The project, which has been generously funded by the European Commission and other donors and supported by the CARICOM Secretariat, has started in 2012 and was completed in 2016.
The project has achieved several key outputs. The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) played a key role in assisting Jamaica and Saint Lucia in developing a Green Economy Scoping Study, while in Haiti a sectoral study was conducted on organic agriculture. The project was also particularly successful in capacity building, both at the institutional level, within the government and academia, and for individuals, through a green economy course for government professionals. The project set up three national multi-stakeholder green economy knowledge platforms and organized green economy conferences that served as a medium to exchange experiences and priorities for a green economy transition within the selected countries. The overall inclusion of green economy principles in national development planning and social policies in Jamaica and Saint Lucia were evidence of the countries’ commitment to green economy, which in turn serves as basis for future impacts.
