GC Today - 20 February 2013

The First Universal Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) entered its third day at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya.

Ministerial Consultations were held on emerging environmental challenges, UNEP's regional presence and responsiveness and emerging policy issues. The Committee of the Whole (COW) addressed international environmental governance, coordination and cooperation within the United Nations system on environmental matters, coordination and cooperation with major groups, and the environment and development agenda.

Other events included a press conference announcing UNEP's strategic partnership with the private sector to facilitate a market shift towards energy-efficient, off-grid lighting and to reduce the estimated 74 million tons of annual carbon emissions from fuel-based light sources commonly used in developing countries.

Three side events were held on the topics of "Building the Ecological Foundation of Food Security", the "Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants", and "Social Dialogue for Green and Decent Jobs". The Food Security side event discussed concrete steps to support building resilient ecological food systems in agriculture dominated landscapes. The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) side event highlighted the multiple benefits of mitigating short-lived climate pollutants for public health, agricultural crop production and local and global climate as well as actions being undertaken by countries. Sweden pledged financial support to CCAC activities, whilst Kenya pledged to join the coalition. The Social Dialogue for Green Jobs side event presented an overview of South Africa and the European Union in green jobs creation, data and policy frameworks, and proposals aimed at starting the transition towards a green economy with social justice at its core.
