The First Universal Session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) entered its final day at the United Nations Office in Nairobi, Kenya.
The closing plenary took place, where the President's summary on the outcome of ministerial consultations was introduced. A report on the outcome of the Committee of the Whole was presented by its Chair. Delegates adopted decisions on chemicals and waste management, advancing justice, governance and law, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the state of the environment and the strengthening and upgrading of the United Nations Environment Programme in the context of paragraph 88 of the Rio+20 outcome document.
Other events included a press conference announcing UNEP leading the Climate Technology Centre and Network and the naming of Mongolia, one of the fastest growing economies, as global host of World Environment Day 2013. A side event on the topic of "Africa priority flagship programmes in the follow-up to the Rio+20 outcomes", presented the approach and principles for developing and implementing the Regional Flagship Programmes with a view to forging partnerships with other regional and international partners.
