Environment and Development Challenges: The Imperatives to Act
Mr. Shunichi Samejima, Senior Executive Director of the Asahi Glass Foundation made the opening address, followed by Dr. Bob Watson, UK’s Chief Scientific Adviser on Environmental Issues,
Dr. Camila Toulmin, Director of the International Institute for Environment and Development and Ms. Cyrie Sendashonga from IUCN who explained the key messages of the paper “Environment and Development: Imperatives to Act. The paper has been drafted by the 20 laureates of the Blue Planet Prize and sponsored by the Asahi Glass Foundation. Following the explanation, discussions were exchanged on how to realize sustainable development including opinions on policies that recommend the elimination of subsidies.
The event was particularly useful for participants, especially those from developing countries, to exchange views with environmental scientists. At the same time, it was also an opportunity for environmental professionals to hear first-hand voices of those who are locally concerned with environmental problems.
