The 1980s: defining sustainable development

The defining political events of the 1980s were the breakdown of the Eastern Bloc and the end of the bi-polar world built on the balance of power between Western and communist countries and their allies in the developing world. The changes that were the culmination of reform and perestroika in the Soviet Bloc came on the heels of years of apparently strong economic growth and massive military spending.
