Disasters resulting from natural and human-caused hazards occur throughout
Europe, often leading to significant environmental damage, economic loss,
human injuries and premature mortality. The overall consequences depend
on both the magnitude of the event and on factors such as population density,
disaster prevention, preparedness and response measures and emergency
planning. Europe generally suffers less from disasters than many developing
countries, due to a higher level of 'coping capacity' in terms of government
ability to prepare and respond to disasters.
