The ‘Future of GEO’ process, launched at UNEA-4 through UNEP/EA.4/RES.23 was initiated to develop various options for the future of the Global Environment Outlook (GEO). A Steering Committee of experts from Member States was constituted to develop these options and put forward its recommendations on the future of GEO to the fifth UN Environment Assembly, taking into account the changes in purpose and approaches different GEOs have undergone.

Below is a list of documents for the Future of GEO process.

In accordance with resolution 23 of the fourth UN Environment Assembly (UNEP/EA.4/RES.23) a Steering Committee of experts from Member States was formed to oversee and manage the production of an options paper and conduct broad consultations on the future of the Global Environment Outlook process.  The work of this Committee began July 24, 2019 with its first virtual meeting and continue until the fifth UN Environment Assembly.  Monthly virtual meetings of the Committee were needed to ensure the objectives of RES.23 are met.

Due to the still unfolding global heath pandemic and in line with the recommendations of the UN’s Environmental Management Group and UNEP policy, travel to meetings should be avoided if virtual meeting facilities will serve the same purpose and achieve adequate results as a face-to-face meeting.  For this reason, UNEP used several virtual meeting platforms and developed some basic procedures to ensure these virtual meetings were as effective and efficient as possible. Summaries of these virtual meetings are provided in the links.

The ‘Future of GEO’ process, launched at the fourth United Nations Environment Assembly through UNEP/EA.4/RES.23 was initiated to develop various options for the future of the Global Environment Outlook. This process delivered these options, and recommendations to the fifth UN Environment Assembly. In developing these options, the Steering Committee, which was formed to oversee and manage the Future of GEO process, considered a number of past evaluations of previous GEOs. Past GEO evaluations reports are provided in the links.
