The Global Partnership on Waste Management

Dear colleagues, friends and partners,

The secretariat of the Global Partnership on Waste Management (GPWM) is pleased to present the first issue of the GPWM quarterly newsletter. We hope that you will find this information useful and that it will stir your interest to learn more about the GPWM.

The GPWM was launched in November 2010 to enhance international cooperation among stakeholders, identify and fill information gaps, share information and strengthen awareness, political will, and capacity to promote resource conservation and resource efficiency. The GPWM aims at establishing a coordinating forum for international organizations, governments, private sector, and other non-governmental entities, to build synergies and thus to avoid duplication of efforts. GPWM WebsiteThe new website for the GPWM is now online at It has information related to the GPWM, past meetings, important documents and upcoming events. It will soon also hosts the Information Platform on Waste Management, an online information portal guiding users to existing databases and information hubs on waste management.

December 2011 GPWM meeting in Vienna

GPWM Vienna Meeting, December 2011On 5 and 6 December 2011, the GPWM secretariat held a meeting in Vienna, which was attended by 20 international experts from various entities. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss work plans for the six sponsored focal areas, to review progress on the Information Platform on Waste Management, and to exchange information across the sponsored focal areas. GPWM Sponsored Focal AreasThe six sponsored focal areas of work recently developed their work plans. They can be found on the GPWM website. The workplan on:

          • E-Waste proposes the development of sustainable business plans including all steps of the electronic devices' life cycle.
  • Marine Litter aims to reduce the amount of land-based litter and solid waste introduced into the marine environment.
  • Waste and Climate Change promotes waste management to become a major saver of greenhouse gases emissions.
  • Waste Agricultural Biomass focuses on the enhancement of the utilization of biomass waste generated by agricultural activities.
  • Waste Minimization promotes waste prevention strategies by focusing on optimizing resource and energy use.

Marine Litter: IGR-3 Meeting in Manila

IGR-3 Meeting in ManillaThe third intergovernmental review meeting (IGR-3) of the Global Programme of Action (GPA) was held in Manila, The Philippines, from January 25 to 27, 2012. The meeting was attended by representatives of 65 Governments and the European Commission. Read more...
