News from the secretariat

Global Partnership On Waste ManagementDear colleagues, friends and partners,
Over the past couple of months, the secretariat has been working to further coordination and information exchange among participants of the GPWM. In addition to regular outreach to broaden the GPWM participants’ base and to enhance its visibility, the secretariat held an Asia-Pacific workshop on the GPWM in April, providing a platform for participants to learn about the GPWM and to share information about ongoing waste management projects.The secretariat has also been developing new components on the GPWM information platform, which will be explained in this newsletter.

Currently, the secretariat is organizing the GPWM biennium conference, which will be held in Osaka, Japan, on 5 and 6 November 2012. Please note the change of dates. You will learn more about these activities below.

Best regards from the GPWM secretariat.

Asia-Pacific workshop on the GPWM

Asia-Pacific workshop on the GPWMThe secretariat held an Asia-Pacific workshop on the GPWM, which took place in Osaka, Japan, from 16 to 18 April 2012. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss the activities currently undertaken by the GPWM secretariat, in particular:

  • the mapping exercise on ongoing waste management activities;
  • the needs assessment for capacity building in waste management;
  • the information sharing component of the GPWM, the Information Platform on Waste Management.

The meeting was attended by around 80 representatives from Governments, intergovernmental organizations, research institutes, academia, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. The workshop report and other workshop material can be found here.

New features on the Information Platform on Waste Management

GPWM information platformThe online information component of the GPWM, the Information Platform on Waste Management, which is envisaged to become a one stop-shop information clearinghouse on waste management, is being further developed. Four new components have been launched recently, including:

All of these components are collaborative, meaning that users can contribute information. To do so, users first need to create an account. Once they have been registered, they can use forms to submit information, which will be reviewed by the GPWM secretariat before being published. Read more...

Mapping of activities and needs assessment report

GPWM Needs Assessment Survey

The mapping on current activities on waste management compiles information from the organizations’ websites. The assessment report tries to provide an overview of ongoing activities to inform stakeholders of already existing projects and thus to help in avoiding duplication of efforts. We would like to encourage stakeholders to share information about ongoing activities with us.

The GPWM is also currently working on a needs assessment report, which will analyze the needs for capacity building on waste management. To gather further input for the needs assessment, we would like to ask national and local stakeholders to fill in the following survey, available in English, French and Spanish. Please send the completed survey to gpwm@unep.org

GPWM biennium conference

GPWM biennium conferenceThe biennium conference for the GPWM will take place on 5 and 6 November in Osaka, Japan. Please note the change of dates. This conference will bring together stakeholders from Governments, civil society, academia, the private sector and the international development community to discuss challenges, opportunities and new trends in waste management.

Please mark your calendars for this high-level event. More information will be soon available on the GPWM website.
