Orangutans are the only great apes occurring outside of Africa . They are now only found in relic populations on the South East Asian islands of Borneo and Sumatra . The main threats faced by the orangutans are forest clearance, mining, conversion of habitat to palm oil plantations and forest fires. Orangutans are the slowest breeding of all primates and spend most of their time living semi solitarily (while all other apes species are social and gregarious).
