UNEP at the Global Transition Dialogue#2

Fulai Sheng the Senior Economist at UNEP’s Economics and Trade Branch participated in a two day dialogue that took place at the Pace University in New York on the 17th and 18th of March 2012. He presented the Briefing Papers that UNEP ETB produced a few weeks ago on the following topics: employment, poverty reduction, valuing nature, advisory services, trade, health, indicators and finance.

Dialogue organized by Centre for Environment and Development (CED) and the Permanent Mission of Sri Lanka to the United Nations in New York

The objective of the session was to evolve a more dynamic dialogue between broader section of stakeholders gathered in New York for Rio+20 negotiations in March 2012 and forge new hope towards a positive outcome at Rio+20.

Rio Preparation Forum: Opportunities and Challenges of a Green Economy

This workshop was organized by The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and co-sponsored by United Nations Environment Programme New York (UNEP) and the Danish industrial biotech firm “Novozymes”

The Chief of UNEP’s Geneva-based Economics and Trade Branch, Steven Stone participated at this workshop.

Experts from Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, the Nature’s Conservancy, World Resources Institute, national experts, including Mr. Santiago Lorenzo, Deputy Director General for Multi-lateral Environmental Agreements for Mexico’s Ministry of Environment and the United Nations gave presentations on the Green Economy with an emphasis on possibilities for cooperation between the public and the private sector. 

Further areas of discussions included the contribution of green economy in poverty eradication and the challenges for LDC’s and developing countries that are willing to achieve a Green Economy.

Lastly, the workshop included a panel discussion on “green energy solutions”, with the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) for a green economy and a sustainable future.
