Reducing water consumption still needed!!

Water ShortageSaving water starts with you. This is how you can contribute to reduce our water consumption and keeping it low:
- Minimize unnecessary flushing (e.g. no flushing prior to use)
- Use the short flush where possible
- Open the tap as little as possible
- Ensure that taps are always switched off:
- during applying soap or shampoo and before washing the soap off
- after use
- if you find a tap left open by somebody else
- Report leakages and not working dual flushes to ravi.chana@unon.org

Messages from UNON’s DG on 15-09-09

Dear Colleagues,

Following the communication which I sent on 7 September regarding the water situation, I wish to update you that our general situation remains unchanged; not unlike that of much of the country.

But amidst the dark cloud there is a silver lining. I am, therefore, pleased to inform you that the water saving measures introduced over the last week have lead directly to a reduction in water consumption on the compound by as much as 30% on certain days. Much of that saving is directly due to you for seriously taking up our challenge to “Save Water”.

I would like to thank all staff for their contribution to this effort. Thank you also for all your constructive suggestions and ideas on other ways to save water.

In other news along this vein, you should also know that, the water rationing measures agreed with Nairobi Water Company are also working. Last week UNON received mains water for the agreed three days, which allowed our underground tanks to fill sufficiently to support the rest of the week. UNON continues to be in constant contact with senior management at Nairobi Water Company, and is making good progress on some alternative measures such an additional mains water supply to the compound.

Finally, UNON is about to complete a hydro geological evaluation of the bore holes on the complex, and based on this will take the necessary steps to further improve UNON’s bore hole water supply with the aim of reducing our reliance on mains water supply.

All existing water saving measures will remain in place, until further notice.

Thank you for your cooperation, and please keep up the good work on saving water wherever possible.
