Hazardous Waste

Minimize

The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal came into force in 1992 and currently has 170 Parties. It is the most comprehensive global environmental agreement on hazardous and other wastes. The Convention aims to protect human health and the environment against the adverse effects resulting from the generation, management, transboundary movements and disposal of hazardous and other wastes. UNEP hosts the Secretariat to the Basel Convention.

Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is a policy framework to foster the sound management of chemicals. Adopted by the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) in 2006, SAICM supports the achievement of the goal of ensuring that by the year 2020 chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on the environment and human health. UNEP hosts the SAICM Secretariat.

Further activities on SAICM are undertaken by UNEP’s Chemicals Branch.
