IETC at UNEP Governing Council
The 27th session of UNEP Governing Council, held in Nairobi from 18 to 22 February 2013, was a historic and well-attended occasion, being the first session to implement universal Government membership of the Council, as agreed at Rio+20 and endorsed by the United Nations General Assembly.

Waste management issues and the role of IETC were addressed in decision 27/12 on chemicals and waste. The Governing Council welcomed the enhanced role of IETC as a focus for UNEP's work on waste management and also welcomed progress in establishing the Global Partnership on Waste Management (hosted by IETC). It encouraged close UNEP collaboration on waste management issues with the Secretariat of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions. The decision called for two significant new pieces of work on waste management: a UNEP-wide strategy on waste and a "global outlook" of challenges, trends and policies in relation to waste. The request for a UNEP strategy on waste reflects the multifaceted nature of waste issues, which engage five UNEP divisions and four sub-programmes. The global outlook will add value to previous publications by addressing aspects of waste management that have received insufficient recent attention. IETC looks forward to engaging stakeholders in the development of these two important new products.
