International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples 2005
On Tuesday, 9 August 2005, the eleventh annual commemoration of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples was held at United Nations Headquarters in New York.

International Symposium on Conserving Cultural and Biological Diversity: The Role of Sacred Natural Sites and Cultural Landscapes, Tokyo, 30 May – 2 June 2005
The Secretariat of the Permanent Forum and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity organized a panel on the protection of sacred sites of indigenous peoples in partnership with UNESCO, United Nations University, and IUCN.

4th session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)
From 16-27 May 2005, over 1,500 indigenous leaders, activists and representatives came together for the fourth session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues held in New York. The Forum examined situations faced by indigenous peoples as countries and organizations strive to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) targets, with a special focus on the first two Goals—to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger and to achieve universal primary education.   Recently, the Forum has published its report with recommendations for UN agencies, governments and civil society.

Inuit leader receives ‘Champion of the Earth’ Award

NEW YORK/NAIROBI, 19 April 2005 - Two monarchs, government and religious leaders, as well as indigenous and youth group representatives were honoured at UN Headquarters with the inaugural UNEP Champions of the Earth award.
