United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

On Thursday 29 June 2006, the new UN Human Rights Council adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and recommended its adoption by the General Assembly in September 2006. On behalf of African nations, Namibia proposed consideration of the declaration to allow further consultations to be concluded by the end of the current General Assembly session in September 2007.

The General Assembly adopted the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples today, Thursday September 13, by a vote of 144 in favour, 4 against and 11 abstensions.
