This training session is part of the joint UNEP and Sustainlabour project on “Strengthening trade union participation in international environmental processes”, implemented with the support of the Government of Spain.
The project and the training aim at empowering workers and trade unions in being active partners for progress on environment and sustainable development issues and in launching related initiatives in their workplaces.
Trade union representatives from four regions, namely Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean, will attend the training.
The training will result in the creation of regional working groups that will be able to provide input to a variety of further activities and disseminate knowledge among unions in their respective regions.
It is a unique opportunity to enhance knowledge on Climate Change, and Sound and Sustainable Management of Chemicals among the working groups, as well as to get trade union representatives from different regions to know each other and to develop coordinated strategies on these issues in the future.
About the project on “Strengthening trade union participation in international environmental processes”
The overall objective of the project is to improve engagement of workers and trade unions in the development and implementation of environmental policy. The project intends to contribute to the implementation of the resolutions adopted by the first Trade Union Assembly on Labour and the Environment (15-17 January 2006), in an attempt to empower workers and trade unions in being active partners for progress on environment and sustainable development issues and in launching related initiatives in their workplaces.
The project, which started in April 2007 and is expected to conclude in May 2009 is implemented in four regions, namely Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean. The project focuses on:
- Capacity building (with a particular focus on climate change, as well as sound and sustainable management of chemicals);
- Adaptation of selected case studies; and
- Awareness raising.
Outputs that will be delivered include:
- ‘Train the trainers’ manual on Climate Change, its consequences on employment and trade union action;
- ‘Train the trainers’ manual on Sound and Sustainable Management of Chemicals;
- Translation of the training manuals into four UN languages, English, French, Russian and Spanish will be made available;
- Review of existing environmental practices in the workplace for replication;
- Participation of workers and trade unions to international environmental meetings: the statements delivered and the position papers circulated during these meetings attest of an increased understanding and knowledge of the environmental issues.
