Partnership for Financing Biodiversity

The Spain-UNEP Partnership for Protected Areas was built from the LifeWeb Initiative launched at the ninth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in 2008. Through the link to the larger LifeWeb Initiative, this partnership—with US$8 million of funding from the Spanish government—provides a unique opportunity to contribute to both the Convention on Biological Diversity Programme of Work on Protected Areas and the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) Programme of Work.

Structured with two key objectives, to improve the management of existing protected areas, and to increase the network of protected areas by either extending existing or creating new ones, the partnership has been running since 2010. The project was designed to work around five components:
