Pan Africa eLearning for the Environment Network

Mainstreaming eLearning for environment in African environmental institutions

The following is an overview of the development of the Pan Africa eLearning for the Environment Network from 2007 to date:

Year: 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011

In response to the Bali Strategic Plan for Technology Support and Capacity Building, UNEP embarked on an initiative in 2007 to promote the use of technology supported learning for environmental education, technical training, and awareness-raising in institutions dealing with environment and sustainable development. As a first step, UNEP developed its own eLearning strategy with assistance from common-sense eLearning consultants and built internal capacity in eLearning course development and managing eLearning programmes. Secondly, UNEP established a number of strategic partnerships with institutions having expertise in the field of technology supported learning.

An eLearning partnership was established with Inwent (Capacity Building International, Bonn/Berlin, since 2011 a part of GIZ) with an initial focus on capacity building in Africa. In the area of training, working relationships were established with the Kenya eLearning Centre (KeLC) and the Namibian Open Learning Trust (NOLNet)

In December 2007, UNEP entered into a partnership with ICWE (International Conferences Workshops and Exhibitions) the organizers of the eLearning Africa and Online Educa Berlin series of conferences.
