The next meeting of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5), the “Parliament of the Environment”, will take place in February 2021 in Nairobi under the Presidency of Norway. The theme of the Assembly is “Strengthening Actions for Nature to Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals”. UNEA 5 will bring together representatives of Governments, Civil Society, the Private Sector, Academia and others to discuss and decide upon the most urgent and emerging issues related to environmental and sustainable development, including the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
On 9 – 10 June 2020 the two Bureaus of the United Nations Environment Assembly and the Committee of Permanent Representatives, which is responsible for oversight and review and for preparing the decisions and resolution to be taken by UNEA, will get together in Oslo, Norway, for a UNEA 5 preparatory meeting in the form of a retreat. As for similar retreats held previously (e.g. in Tallinn, Estonia in 2018), an international consultation targeting Major Groups and Stakeholder, will be organized back-to-back to the retreat.
The consultation will take place on June 7-8, 2020, in Oslo, Norway. It will be organized by the Norwegian Forum for Development and Environment in close cooperation with UNEP, UNEP’s Major Groups Facilitating Committee and other stakeholders, and it will bring together around 150 representatives from civil society globally. It is foreseen that it includes a dialogue with the CPR and UNEA Bureaus.
