Promoting sound management of chemicals and waste by the year 2020

The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management was adopted in 2006 as a policy framework to promote chemical safety around the world. Its ambition is to achieve the sound management of chemicals throughout their life cycle so that by the year 2020 chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on the environment and human health. As 2020 rapidly approaches, governments have been examining progress towards that goal and discussing the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management’s future beyond 2020, when its current mandate expires.

The third meeting of the intersessional process considering the Strategic Approach and the sound management of chemicals and waste beyond 2020 (IP3) took take place from 30 September to 4 October 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. The objective of the forum was to support stakeholders in their efforts to elaborate the future arrangements of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management beyond 2020 for consideration and adoption at the next session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5) to be held in Bonn, Germany, from 5 to 9 October 2020.

At the meeting, participants discussed possible elements for a post-2020 platform for international cooperation on the sound management of chemicals and waste for consideration by the fifth meeting of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management’s governing body, the International Conference on Chemicals Management, when it convenes in Bonn, Germany, in October 2020.

The United Nations Environment Programme provides secretariat support to the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management, with the objective of enhancing multisectoral multi-stakeholder engagement, and to encourage broader participation and cooperation in the chemicals and waste agenda.
