Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), 4 October, 2011 - Regional preparations for next year's UN Sustainable Development Conference (Rio+20) in Brazil are among the priorities at a workshop on sustainable development in West Asia, co-organised by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Some 60 delegates representing National Committees and institutions are participating in the Institutional Framework for Sustainable Development in the Arab Region workshop which takes place from 3-5 October 2011.

The main objective of the workshop is to identify the reforms necessary to address the emerging challenges that hinder the sustainable development process in the Arab region and to look at overall governance issues in relation to sustainable development.

During the three-day meeting, experts will be assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the existing institutional frameworks in the Arab region at both national and regional levels, with the aim of defining the most appropriate mechanisms that improve the sustainable development governance system.

Participants in the meeting will share the national experiences and shed light on the findings and studies related to the institutional framework for sustainable development carried out by UNEP and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), who are co-organizing the meeting in partnership with the League of Arab States and the Presidency for Meteorology and Environment of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The workshop is part of the national and regional preparatory meetings series towards Rio+20 that are being organized jointly UNEP, ESCWA and the League of Arab States.

The Jeddah workshop is the second in a series of Arab Regional Prepartions for Rio+20, following a conference on the role of green industries in promoting economic development in the region, which was held on 28-30 September, in Beirut

Following the conclusion of the meetings, a statement covering all outcomes and recommendations will be drafted and presented to the Arab Preparatory Committee for Rio+20, during the League of Arab States session to be held on 17-19 October in Cairo.
