The role of the UNEP New York Office is to maintain a close link between UNEP headquarters in Nairobi and UN Headquarters in New York. The Office represents UNEP at the intergovernmental and inter-agency level at UNHQ, including at the General Assembly , the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD), among many others.

The Office ensures that UNEP’s voice and guidance on environmental policy issues are considered in the deliberations which take place at UNHQ. In addition, it contributes to UNEP’s public information and outreach efforts. The office was established in 1973 and served as the Regional Office for North America Until 1999. Elliott C. Harris is the Director of the New York Office.
