INTERGOVERNMENTAL POLICY CO-ORDINATION

One of the main roles of UNEP New York Office is to represent the organization at UN Headquarters by serving as the link between UNEP and the following stakeholders: Governments (represented by their Permanent Mission and visiting delegations), agencies, funds and programmes of the UN system, and departments within the UN Secretariat.

The New York Office is actively involved in intergovernmental meetings to ensure that environmental policy issues are considered in the deliberations and recommendations of the General Assembly and Economic and Social Council, and their subsidiary bodies. The Office also participates in relevant UN sustainable development summits, conferences and events, such as the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) in Brazil in May-June 2012.

The Office also provides guidance and support to the UNEP Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum (GC/GMEF) (see below) by preparing key policy documents and following up at UN Headquarters on its decisions and also the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly(see http://www.unep.org/resources/gov/overview.asp).
