UN Executive Committee on Economic and Social Affairs

UNEP is a core member of the Executive Committee on Economic and Social Affairs (EC-ESA), which works to provide strategic direction and ensure complementarity in the work of the various UN entities involved in the economic and social areas. EC-ESA aims to: (i) ensure a greater coherence of views within the UN; (ii) facilitate a more effective participation of developing countries in global processes; (iii) achieve a better balance between the global and regional dimensions of development, in terms of analysis, norm and standard setting and technical assistance; and (iv) strengthen the linkages among the UN normative, analytical and operational work. UNEP also engages in the work of a number of EC-ESA’s thematic ‘clusters’.

Most recently, the ‘EC-ESA Plus’ mechanism was established (mid-2010) as a way to bring relevant UN system agencies, the World Bank, IMF and the Rio Convention secretariats together with the Members of the Executive Committee on Economic and Social Affairs (ECESA) to prepare for Rio+20. The convenor of EC-ESA – the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, is also the Secretary-General of the Rio+20 Conference.
