REF-TALK 2: HFOs; will it substitute the HCFC & HFC as long-term solutions?

Over the last few years, technology providers surprised the HVAC&R industry with the development and introduction of fluorinated refrigerants that has low-GWP characteristics close or similar to natural refrigerants. With start in deploying those refrigerants commercially in automobile industry for Vehicles air-conditioning particularly in Europe, people start to wonder if HFOs can also be considered as long-term solutions in different HVAC&R applications other than MAC.

Availability, cost, blend composition considerations and safety are questions being raised lately by the industry to the newly developed HFOs that started to be promoted as alternative for commercial refrigeration and Air-Conditioning applications. Availability of compressors designed for HFOs is another concern that also being raised.

This Webinar will try to shed light on those concerns through presenting feedback from industry and end users worked with HFOs and what are potentials, challenges and expectations associated with its use. The Webinar should allow experts from the field to discuss and seek clarifications directly from the technology providers and end-users.

Mr. Eltalouny joined UNEP in 2003. He holds Mechanical Engineering Degree from Cairo University, and specialized in the field of Refrigeration and Air-conditioning. Before joining the UN he spent 10 years in the Refrigeration Industry and 4 years as Technical Advisor for the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA) for the implementation of Montreal Protocol. Mr. Eltalouny is currently responsible for the implementation of phase-out plans of ODS in West Asia region and is closely working with West Asian governments to eliminate the use of ozone depleting refrigerants in different refrigeration and air-conditioning industrial and servicing sectors as well as combating illegal trade in ODS and ODS-based products.

Dr. Denis Clodic, President of EReIE

EReIE is an R&D company (he created in January 2011) working downstream research laboratories for development of technologies that have been proven at the laboratory scale. Dr. Clodic is emeritus research director of MINES ParisTech. He was the Head of the Center for Energy and Processes for the last 18 years. Thermodynamics of energy systems is the core of his competencies. He is author or co-author of more than 150 international conference papers and of more than 30 peer reviewed articles. Denis Clodic is co-laureate of 2007 Nobel Price for its contributions to IPCC; he is member of Académie des Technologies since November 2010.He is a member of the ANR scientific council on energy, vice-president of AFCE (association on refrigerant choices), ASHRAE member and chair of 2 standard committees, member of the Technical Option Committee of UNEP on refrigerants.

Mr. Mark W Spatz, Global Refrigerant Technology Leader, Honeywell’s Fluorine Products

Mark W Spatz is the Global Leader for Refrigerant Technology with Honeywell Fluorine Products and for over twenty years was responsible for assisting the air conditioning and refrigeration industries in the transition to environmentally friendlier refrigerants His extensive background includes nearly forty years of experience in the research, development, and design of refrigeration, cooling, energy, and heat transfer systems. In addition to vapor compression technology, conducted research and development on other technologies such as desiccant cooling, absorption, heat pipe technology, Stirling, and Vuilleumier cycles.
Mr. Spatz received a Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Union College and a Bachelor degree from City College NY. He is an active member of ASHRAE and SAE.

Dr. Thomas J. Leck, Sr. Principal Investigator New Refrigerant Development DuPont Fluorochemicals

Thomas Leck has 34 years of R&D and Technical work at the DuPont Laboratories.  He has worked in refrigeration, lubricants, fluoropolymers, coatings, and chemical catalysis.  He joined the DuPont Refrigerants technology organization in 1991 and worked on technical issues necessary to bring non ozone depleting refrigerants to the commercial markets.  For the past seven years he has been working with fluoroolefin refrigerant compositions with goals of identifying more environmentally sustainable refrigerants for use in stationary AC and refrigeration work, and evaluation of fluids for high temperature energy recovery applications.  Dr. Leck received his PhD from the University of Illinois for research to elucidate mechanisms and quantify reaction rates of ozone depletion by chlorine and hydroxyl free radicals in the stratosphere, related to leakage of CFC and HCFC refrigerants.

Ms. Barbara H. Minor, Engineering Fellow

Barbara joined the DuPont Company in 1981 as a chemical engineer in Wilmington, Delaware. She  is currently with DuPont Fluoroproducts, and is an engineering fellow for the DuPont Refrigerants Business. Barbara has been in the refrigerants industry for over nineteen years and has developed new refrigerants for stationary and automotive air conditioning. She holds over ninety U.S. patents for refrigerants, cleaning agents and aerosol propellants as well as several publications in the field. Barbara is an active member of ASHRAE and is past Chair of TC 3.1 – Refrigerants and Secondary Coolants. She is also a member of the Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute serving on the AHRI Steering Committee and Research and Technology Committee.

Dr. Karim Amrane, Vice President, Regulatory and Research Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute

Dr. Amrane is Vice President of Regulatory and Research at the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).  He manages the industry’s cooperative research program and is responsible for the development and implementation of AHRI’s regulatory policy.  Dr. Amrane has over 25 years of experience in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry.  He is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).
