Joint OSCE UNEP training seminar on prevention of illegal trade, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, 29 May - 01 June 2012

The joint OSCE / UNEP training seminar on prevention and detection of illegal transportation of environmental commodities took place in the OSCE Border Management Staff College in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, 29.5.-1.6.2012 with participants from Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova. The meetings focused on the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions, CITES and the Montreal Protocol.

The UNEP trainer introduced the Green Customs Initiative and the Montreal Protocol and presented recent cases of illegal trade in ozone-depleting substances mainly from Europe & Central Asia. The training was supported by interactive multiple choice questions, WCO e-learning module on Montreal Protocol and its quizes as well as videos. At the meeting venue, several fire extinguishers where found without any labelling of contents, origine, use, expiry date, safety precautions highlighting the need for national legislation on minimum labeling requirements of products and chemicals.
