Countries agree to curb powerful greenhouse gases in largest climate breakthrough since Paris

Kigali, 15 October 2016 - Nearly 200 countries struck a landmark deal today to reduce the emissions of powerful greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), in a move that could prevent up to 0.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by the end of this century. The amendment to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer endorsed in Kigali today is the single largest contribution the world has made towards keeping the global temperature rise "well below" 2 degrees Celsius, a target agreed at the Paris climate conference last year. This side event will provide an overview of safety issues associated with low-GWP, non-ozone depleting substances and the relevant international and regional standards. There will be consideration of how standards can be useful in supporting the adoption of alternatives in the context of the HCFC phase-out in developing countries and how a lack of standards or inappropriate standards can present a barrier, especially from the point of view of hazard prevention and safe handling.

New Report Shows HFC growth in Developing Countries - Report summarizes key findings from National HFC Inventories

30 September 2016 - The use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) is expected to rapidly rise in the coming decades unless more is done to curb their growth. This according to a new report by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC) and the UN Environment OzonAction Branch, which looked at HFC use in six countries and found that its average annual growth was 16 per cent. Ozone layer hole appears to be healing, scientists say

The Guardian, 30 June 2016 - The vast hole in the ozone layer above Antarctica appears to be healing, scientists say, putting the world on track to eventually remedy one of the biggest environmental concerns of the 1980s and 90s. Research by US and UK scientists shows that the size of the ozone void has shrunk, on average, by around 4m sq km since 2000. The measurements were taken from the month of September in each year, when the ozone hole starts to open up each year. Read more...
