“Molorak” Junior Team (meaning “Planet” in Armenian) was founded after the National Ozone Unit of Armenia conducted its first awareness seminar on the Ozone Layer issues at the middle school N176 in 2006. Since then the “Molorak” Junior Team developed projects which aim at raising awareness among children of primary and secondary schools of Armenia on:
  • the importance of the ozone layer,
  • its depletion,
  • ozone depleting substances and their global warming potential as well,
  • the efforts of world community to save the ozone layer,
  • the input children can personally have and
  • means of protection from ultraviolet radiation.

“Molorak” members also tell children about the Montreal Protocol and how it unites countries all over the world, about its input to climate protection issue.
Another activity implemented by the “Molorak” junior environmental Club is the Campaign “Save the trees – recycle paper”. Children organized collection of the paper waste at school during a certain period and then took it to the paper-recycling factory where they saw the process of turning the paper waste into the packaging cardboard.

We sat down for a quick chat with Mr Aram Gabrielyan, Climate Focal Point at the Ministry of Nature Protection of Armenia.
In this interview, he talked about how the ozone layer protection can respond to the the climate challenge by establishing clear differentiations between the obligations of the countries. He also evoked the next Climate Change Conference in Cancun. Stressing the fact that Parties should turn their faces toward the problem and not against it. Finally, he shared with us his wish for the Earth: people have to realize that they are part of nature and start living in peace with it.

Let us introduce you to the Climate Change Information Center. The Climate Change Information Center was created in 1997 within the framework of the UNDP/GEF "Armenia - Country Study on Climate Change" Program. The activities of Climate Change Information Center are various, it includes:
  • Steps towards inclusion of climate change issues into social, economic and environmental policies;
  • Actions to foster transfer of technologies;
  • Climate change research and systematic observations;
  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation analysis;
  • Education, training and awareness raising issues;
  • Information on development of capacities on national and regional levels; and
  • Programs and events to minimize the climate change negative impacts on economy, health and environment.

We believe our children must take the lead in moving toward a greener future by providing them with an environmental education. Children need to know about ozone depletion and its consequences because for as long as the ozone layer remains depleted, they need to protect themselves from excess UV radiation and practice "safe sun" behaviour.
For this reason, UNEP has created the Ozzy Ozone Programme. Ozzy Ozone is the UNEP's flagship campaign for children regarding stratosphere ozone protection. In those two cartoon booklets, Ozzy Ozone is learning about climate change effects. Have a look and enjoy your reading!

Ozzy Goes Polar Ozzy Ozone Defender of Our Planet: Ozzy Goes Polar
Ozzy Ozone and his friend Zoe will be falling to the North Pole and carried there by Tilman the Polar bear They will learn what happens to earth’s protective shield the ozone layer and what is the interlinkage with global warming. They will also meet some scientists in Tara boat.
Ozzy Goes Island Hoping Ozzy Ozone Defender of Our Planet: Ozzy Goes Island Hoping
Ozzy Goes Island Hopping features ozone depletion and climate change with a special focus on Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). In this story Ozzy and Zoe travel from the stratosphere to visit their friends Alida, the leatherback turtle; Guno, the sand crab and Ronaldo, the red snapper in Suriname to learn about the effects of climate change in small islands and low-lying coastal states.

One lesson from ozone layer protection to apply in our response to the climate challenge and One wish for the Earth: two questions we asked Mrs. Asya Muradyan, Ozone Focal Point and Head of the Land and Atmosphere Protection Division.
From the Ministry of Nature and Protection, she praised for compromise in between parties and encouraged people to get more involved but above all: patient. Little by little we will find solutions to the problems with have caused!
