Home The 2005 Ozone Awards were bestowed to 16
men and women who led and inspired the scientific breakthroughs confirming
the human impact on the ozone layer, the subsequent assessments of ozone science
and environmental effects, and the international negotiations that resulted in
the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.
Two special
awards were also presented to two former
UNEP staff members for their exceptional dedication and outstanding contribution
to the protection of the ozone layer: - Dr.
Omar E. El-Arini served as the first Chief Officer of the Secretariat of the
Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol. During his
tenure from 1991 to 2003, the Fund disbursed some 1.5 billion US dollars to over
130 developing countries. Dr. El-Arini established a highly professional Secretariat
that continues to support the Fund's operation with great effectiveness.
- Mr.
Madhava Sarma served as Executive Secretary of the Ozone Secretariat during
the critical years of 1991 to 2000. During his tenure, the Protocol's institutions
and reporting systems were streamlined, and the Protocol was strengthened through
a series of adjustments and amendments.
