1.4 Prioritization of Sectors and Parameters

The first task of this report was to identify the priority areas relevant for formulating environmental standards and guidelines. The second task was to go into detail to review as many of the existing national standards as possible in those areas. In case no regulations existed, the report proposes for enactment of legislation or promulgation of regulations. The report identifies the key media as air, water and soil. In each medium it was necessary to prioritise the nature and types of pollutants bearing in mind that the number of standards developed must recognise the existing national capacity for enforcement and the available
industrial technology.
