The Motor Vehicles Emission Reduction Training for vehicle inspectors was held at the UNEP Headquarters on 27 March 2009. The training drew 69 participants from 9 African countries including Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Mozambique and Malawi. The main aim was to create self compliance and policing through sensitization and detailing of benefits to be accrued from proper maintenance of vehicles.
Resource persons for the training were Michael Walsh the chairman of the International Council on Clean Transport (ICCT); David Oliver from Cape Town City Health Department; and Dr. Michael Gatari from University of Nairobi.
The main topics covered during the training were:
- Health impacts from vehicle emissions
- Role of unleaded and clean sulphur fuels in reducing motor vehicle emissions
- Emission reduction technologies
- The emissions testing program in the city Cape Town
