West and Central Africa Sub-Regional Workshop on Better Air Quality, 20-22 July 2009 , Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire

Twenty one countries from the West and Central African region and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) participated at a sub-regional workshop on Better Air Quality that was held from 20-21 July (Policy Session) and 22 July 2009 (Ministerial Session) in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. The workshop that was jointly organised by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Forests of Cote d’Ivoire, the African Refiners Association (ARA) and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) through the Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV) is an initiative of several partners including the above and  the Air Pollution Information Network for Africa (APINA), Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the Swedish International Development Co-operation Agency (Sida),  and the Global Atmospheric Pollution Forum (GAPF) » Read More

Launch of Media Campaign for Public Support for Cleaner Buses and Fuels, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - 15 April 2009

A one-day media campaign launch to raise awareness of stakeholders on benefit of clean public transportation took place on 15 April in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. A national workshop on sulphur reduction as a means improve urban air quality in Mali was held on 11-12 March in Bamako, Mali. The workshop, organized by the Direction Nationale de l'Assainissement et du Controle des Pollutions et des Nuisances was officiated by Mr Cheickne Sidibe, the Technical Advisor to the Minister of Environment and Sanitation of Mali. » Read More

Africa Region Article: Sulphur reduction sensitization in Gambia commences

The National Environment Agency together with two Departments of State, Energy and Environment, coordinated a national workshop on sulphur reduction in Banjul on 27-28 November 2008. The workshop, which was opened by the Permanent Secretary of the Department of State for Forestry and Environment on behalf of the Minister, was planned to take advantage of the on-going process of reviewing petroleum products legislation in Gambia that is expected to result in new Petroleum Products Law and Regulations. » Read More

Eastern Africa Sub-Regional Workshop on Better Air Quality in Cities

Eleven Eastern African countries met on 21-23 October 2008 to develop a sub-regional policy framework to address the increasing challenge of air pollution in urban areas. Over 100 participants drawn from Burundi, Djibouti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda attended the sub-regional workshop that was also attended by international experts from the Stockholm Environment Institute, Air Pollution Information Network for Africa, African Refiners Association, International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association, and the World Bank. » Read More

Sub-regional Workshop for North African states on the phase-out of leaded gasoline

50 participants from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia met at the Tunis International Center of Environmental Technologies (CITET), on 14-16 August 2008 to review progress in phasing out leaded gasoline. The first day of the meeting that was coordinated by IPIECA discussed technical issues to the phase-out of leaded gasoline in particular refining technologies, vehicle benefits of unleaded fuels and case examples from Africa on their experiences in phasing out leaded gasoline. The second and third day saw the three countries present their national strategies to move to unleaded gasoline and low sulphur fuels. The meeting was the joint effort of several of the PCFV partners in particular the PCFV Clearing-House, IPIECA, ACFA and ARA. Southern Africa Sub-regional Policy Dialogue on Air Pollution

The Policy Session (5-6 March) is follow-up to the regional conference on Better Air Quality in sub-Saharan African Cities (BAQ-SSA) that was held in 2006 in Nairobi, Kenya where Ministers recommended a sub-regional approach to discussions on air pollution in Africa. The meeting will also follow up on APINA's (Air Pollution Information Network for Africa) work in the sub-region. The Ministerial Session (7 March) will discuss and adopt a Policy Framework on Air pollution for the sub-region that will be developed during the Policy Session. The policy framework will set specific targets and timeframes to address air pollution in the following key areas: transport, industry and mining, waste management, open burning (fires) and indoor air pollution. Other focus areas include trans-boundary pollution, air quality monitoring and public outreach.

The meeting is jointly organized by UNEP, APINA and Stockholm Environment Institute and the USEPA.
