The Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles is active globally, promoting cleaner fuels and vehicles in developing and transitional countries.
Africa
National activities have taken place in Angola, Benin, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Nigeria, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In terms of regional activities, the Clean Air Initiative in Sub-Saharan African Cities (CAI-Africa) was launched in 1998 as a response to an increase in air quality problems in the region.
Asia and the Pacific
National activities over the current 2008/09 program of work period Lao PDR and Mongolia, as well Regional and sub regional activities have included raising awareness to 'Male Declaration' countries in Sri Lanka, promotion of the PCFV through the Environmentally Sustainable Transport (EST) project supported by UNCRD in Lao PDR in June 2008 and in the People's Republic of Korea in February 2009, as well as in Thailand both at the BAQ in November 2008 and at the East Asia PCFV workshop in May 2009.
National vehicle activities have been launched in Philippines through training on the UNEP Clean Fleet Management Toolkit where several companies have been trained and interest to implement the Toolkit expressed. This follows the successful launch of the Toolkit in November 2008 at the BAQ in Bangkok, Thailand.
Central/Eastern Europe and Central Asia
National activities have taken place in Turkey, Serbia and Bulgaria, and regional activities included a workshop in Hungary on cleaner fuels and vehicles in Central and Eastern Europe.
Middle East, North Africa and West Asia
Key regional activities included a policy development meeting for the Middle East and North Africa. This meeting, hosted jointly by the Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles and the Asian Clean Fuels Association, discussed possible national plans of action to alleviate the growing scale of urban air pollution in Arab cities caused by vehicles, some of which are amongst the worst in the world.
Latin America and the Caribbean
National activities have taken place in Brazil and Mexico, and one of the key regional activities was the creation of the Center for Sustainable Transport in Mexico City. |
